Meet Up With My Academic Advisor.

23-10-2019

Was my first ever meet up with my Academic Advisor, Dr Farah binti Zaini.

It was a collective meeting with all the other eight first year mentee. She introduced herself to us and proceed to tell us about the purposes of having this Mentor-Mentee system in UNIMAS. The most important purpose is to allow us to take our final exam. But this is done with a process, which are
1) cross checking our attendance. Only those with 80% attendance or higher is allowed to take the final exam.
2) allowing us to print our exam slip.

With this being said, Dr Farah tells us about the occurring trend of first semester, first year students which is obtaining low results. The major cause of the trend is time management as we first year's are filled with so much passion and enthusiasm that our academic gets neglected.

Dr Farah is a working officer at The Cempaka Dorm and stresses on the importance of staying at the hostel as a first year. It is compulsory for every 1st year to stay in dormitory to expose the students towards University's activities. Thus, helping development of soft skills  as these set of skills are usually learned outside of the classroom.

Our study plans were also stressed on as she proceeded to tell us that whenever a student obtains a 2.50 CGPA or lower. The student will be only be able to take 15 credit units in a semester. The student must consult with her and be advise on what to take during that semester based on our academic plans. The academic plan is different in every batch.

Dr Farah is teaching psychology thus tells us towards the end of the meeting about the importance of stress management. As we are still new she is worried that we are not able to cope with stress and might result in affecting our mental health. She suggested that talking someone would help, giving that level of trust towards a new person in our lives would be hard so Dr Farah told us to take our time in getting to know someone throughout these 3 years. Besides stress management, another factor that relates to contributing stress is money management. Dr Farah's biggest advise was to help us remember that we should always know where we stand in terms of money compared to the people around our social circle. Despite that, we should always be open towards our friends as we are not in their shoes.
